MAKUKU PRIVATE HUNTING · CONSERVATION THROUGH MANAGEMENT

Hunting with Purpose

On a privately managed wildlife property outside Mazabuka, Zambia, hunting is one of the tools used to maintain healthy wildlife populations and protect the land for future generations.

WELCOME TO MAKUKU

Hunting Done Right

In the absence of large natural predators, wildlife populations must be carefully managed to prevent them from exceeding the available food and habitat. Maintaining balanced numbers protects the condition of individual animals, the health of each herd and the land that supports them.

Each year, selected animals are removed through hunting, live capture or culling for meat. Hunting is therefore not separate from conservation at Makuku; it is one of the practical tools used to support a healthy and sustainable wildlife population.

We host only a limited number of hunts each year, giving every guest the time, space and guidance needed for a responsible and rewarding experience. Hunts may be conducted with either rifle or bow, depending on the species and the hunter’s ability.

THE HUNTING EXPERIENCE · WHAT TO EXPECT

What to Expect

Time in the Field

Days begin early and unfold at the pace of the bush. We follow tracks, watch the wind and take the time to understand what is moving through the country. There is no production line and no pressure to rush — only a well-managed hunt and the space to experience it properly.

Behind the Scenes

A successful safari depends on more than the hunt itself. Makuku’s licensed abattoir, cold rooms and dedicated processing facilities ensure that every animal is handled professionally from the field onwards. Our team recovers game and prepares trophies by skinning, cleaning and salting them for collection by the client’s chosen taxidermist. We can recommend trusted specialists, arrange transport to and from Lusaka where required, and assist international guests with Professional Hunter arrangements.

The Harvest

Every animal is fully utilised, ensuring that nothing is wasted. Meat is processed on site and contributes to staff provisions, local sales and projects that promote game meat as a sustainable food source. Hunters may purchase meat from their own hunt separately, if required. Trophies are professionally prepared for collection by the client’s chosen taxidermist.

HUNTING REGULATIONS

How We Operate

Respect for the land, the wildlife, firearms and the people working alongside us forms the foundation of every safari at Makuku.

Before Your Safari

Licences, quotas and the day’s plan are confirmed before entering the field. Every guest receives a safety briefing covering the terrain, hunting method and expectations.

In the Field

Hunters must follow the guide’s instructions and exercise safe, responsible judgement at all times. A shot should only be taken when the hunter is confident of making a clean and humane kill.

Wounded Animals

Any animal wounded by a guest will be charged in full, whether or not it is recovered. The guide’s decision on whether an animal has been wounded or cleanly missed is final.

FIREARMS AT MAKUKU

Bring Your Own or Hire Ours

Safety & Suitability

Guests are welcome to bring their own licensed firearm or, by prior arrangement, hire one from Makuku.

Before hunting begins, each guest will be asked to demonstrate that they can handle their chosen firearm safely and competently. Our guides are available to assist with zeroing, local conditions and shot placement where required.

Makuku reserves the right to confirm whether a firearm, calibre and ammunition are suitable for the species being hunted.

Bringing Your Own Firearm

Zambian citizens and residents must carry proof of ownership and a valid firearm licence, or the appropriate Zambia Police authorisation to use a firearm belonging to someone else.

International guests may bring their own firearms and ammunition, provided they hold the required licences, export permits and travel documentation. Full firearm details should be supplied well before arrival so that the relevant Zambian import requirements can be confirmed.

The responsibility for obtaining and carrying the correct documentation remains with the guest.

Hiring a Makuku Firearm

A selection of licensed and well-maintained firearms is available for guests who prefer not to travel with their own.

Firearm hire is USD 50 per firearm per day, excluding ammunition.

Guests requiring a firearm should indicate this when making their enquiry so that availability and costs can be included in the quotation.
